Comment, Parkdale Cricket Club, Melbourne - The purchase of the Flicx Match pitch has been applauded by all members of Parkdale CC.  With appropriate preparation of the grass surface, (mowing and rolling) the pitch has exceeded expectations of performance.

The main benefits for U/12 cricketers are that the pitch allows front foot play, the ball bounces truly, the ball does not trampoline over shoulder and head height as is often the case with the trajectory bowled by younger cricketers on traditional synthetic surfaces.  The performance has been so good the Senior Firsts/Seconds/Thirds/Fourths have all gained centre wicket practice using the Flicx Match pitch.

From a club perspective, the Flicx Match pitch has enabled the club to host U/12 matches at our main clubroom reserve.  This has provided better amenities for our players and parents as well as opposition teams.  The bonus of this has been the performance and turnover of the canteen, selling breakfast/coffees etc.  This additional source of income has allowed the club to recover the cost of the initial outlay for the Flicx Match pitch and add the extra revenue to our junior program.

The Flicx Match pitch also removes issues of council ground allocation.

Appropriate care needs to be taken when moving the pitch into position and when storing the product, however the set-up and removal can be undertaken in less than ten minutes.

As Secretary and Junior Co-ordinator at Parkdale CC I strongly recommend the product for its performance and versatility.  I would also like to thank Flicx Australasia Managing Director Mr Paul Gilchrist for his support of local cricket and specifically junior cricket.

Comment - Moorabbin Park Cricket Club, Melbourne (Victorian Turf Cricket Association): 'The Flicx Pitch proved to be a perfect solution for our ground shortfall, placing it on our senior ground, it enabled our Under 12s to play at the Clubs' main ground with parents and officals having access to Club canteen and associated facilities. This certainly has made it easier to get support of parents new to the club. The Flicx Pitch is a perfect solution for clubs facing similar ground allocation issues for their juniors. Larger turf grounds could comfortably fit up to 4 Flicx Pitches providing a carnival like atmosphere. The Flicx Pitch is rolled onto a strip of grass between the middle of the ground and the fenceline in front of our pavillion. The grass is prepared on a Thursday night before Saturday morning play, mown and then rolled with the turf roller to get a firm flat base. The 2 rolls of the Pitch is assembled in 10 to 15 minutes by 2 people and plays very well laid straight onto the grass, providing an ideal bounce height - a significant improvement on the very high bounce from synthetic grass pitches with a concrete base, particularly for juniors, enabling us to teach the kids to get onto the front foot. The Pitch stores easily in our shed, standing vertically as 2 half pitch rolls, comfortably transported using the Flicx Pitch carry Cradle. We've had our pitch for 7 years and it is still in perfect condition after years of use. Derek Jennison, Vice President.

Comment - Emmanuel South Oakleigh Cricket Club, Melbourne (Mercantile Cricket Association): We use the Flicx Pitch for our Juniors on a Friday evening, now meaning we have the kids playing on our main oval where the Club is based. The pitch performs well and it's far better than having the team play at another venue away from the Club and where there are no facilities. We are very happy with the Flicx Pitch. Bruce 'Gunna' Nicholas, President.

Comment - Barkers Creek Cricket Club, Castlemaine (Country Victoria): Paul, I thought that I would drop you a line about the flicx wicket, tonight was the first time we have had the oppurtunity to use the wicket due to the christmas break.    Our Under 16's and younger players trained on the wicket, we laid it on the centre turf wicket.    The wicket to tell you the truth exceeded our expectations.   All the kids were very happy with the way the wicket played.    As did the parents, coachs and other adults present.   I thought the bounce was good, but as stated not over the top as some hard wickets tend to be.      We feel that the wicket is certainly up to training for our open age sides.     Again very simple to lay out and prepare and also roll up.   We are going to forward our good reports to the Castlemaine association and hope to have a game involving our Under 16 junior side on the wicket on a Friday night before the end of the year.

Thanks again Paul I will keep you undated on the progress that our club has with the use of the Flicx wicket.

                Cheers and thanks David SEMMENS

Comment - Peter Rowlands, the Swan Hill District Cricket Association Delegate, says the SHDCA has used the Flicx Match Pitch for ‘C Grade’ (3rd Eleven) Senior Cricket in recent seasons during times when grounds have been under renovation. Peter describes the performance of the Flicx Pitch as playing similar to a ‘dead turf wicket’ providing suitable bounce and reliability for the competition. Given the pitch was utilized for 3rd Eleven cricket, it was certainly deemed appropriate for this Grade. Peter advises the better the sub-surface preparation, the better the wicket performs. In some ways similar to turf wicket preparation.

Comment - ‘In my position as Coaching and Development Manager for Tasmanian Cricket, I feel I must thank you for introducing us to the Flicx Cricket Pitch. It was particularly useful or the lunch-time entertainment game on the Bellerive Oval during the famous second Test between Australia and Pakistan in December 1999. It meant that the outfield could be safely used at lunch time, and that when the entertainment game was over, it was simple to roll up the Flicx pitch and move it off the field.

Our sponsor, Milo, also benefited from valuable exposure of their logo on the Flicx pitch. In addition, the promotional nature of the Flicx pitch that facilitates sponsor logos makes it extremely attractive for sponsors to become involved in the development of cricket. From our point of view when approaching sponsors for support, we can offer them added benefit in the branding of the actual pitch – wherever the game is played.

Our experience with this unique Flicx pitch has been that it is easy to use and demands low maintenance.

The cricketers themselves have been impressed with the true bounce of the pitch and the fact that all bowlers can be confident of their delivery, from spin to seam. From a development point of view, young cricketers (especially bowlers) can be coached in correct techniques – and the true bounce means that their game is predictable and will hold their interest. We have found that the Flicx pitch is equally suitable for both soft and hard balls.

We look forward to extending the use of the Flicx cricket pitch in our development programme’.

In September 2000 Cricket Victoria’s Neale Price and Paul Montgomery conducted a Flicx Pitch trial at the City of Casey Oval with a view to get as close to a realistic game scenario as possible. The pitch had already been trialled by Camberwell Magpies and Ringwood Cricket Clubs with varying degrees of success and not in ideal situations. For the purposes of the trial at Casey the pitch was laid over compacted dirt to provide a firm flat sub-surface. Various 156g balls were used, from quite new to very worn. Neale’s findings are as follows:

  • The bounce and carry for both medium pace bowling and spin bowling was more than adequate and similar to that of synthetic grass over concrete.
  • The ball seamed both ways in moderate fashion with no alarming variance.
  • Both Off spin and Leg spin were trialled and the pitch responded favourably when spin was implemented correctly.
  • Batsmen commented that they were happy with the way the ball came through and had no problem keeping their footing with standard style rubber soled cricket shoes. Bowlers comments were of a similar nature. (The players involved were all accustomed to Synthetic Grass or matting Pitches).
  • The pitch lays flat with only a small rise along the edge, approximately 12mm, with this problem eradicated if the pitch is embedded slightly into the surface. (Grass removed or rolled firmly).
  • There is no doubt that this pitch will not perform up to standard if laid on top of long grass or over an under prepared substrate.
  • The product is guaranteed against UV for 10 years under constant exposure to the elements and, unless stolen, is almost a lifetime product. One area that is exposed to wear and tear on a continual basis is where the bat is continually tapped down by the batsman when the bowler is coming in to bowl. This is well catered for in the fact that the product is made up of inter locking squares of approximately 100mm each and pieces can be removed and added where necessary.
  • The pitch can come in various colours, but the basic is green, and the markings (batter’s centre mark, crease line) are already factored into the product when manufactured.
  • It rolls up into two pieces in a similar manner to standard matting but because of its rigid nature, does need a pole or similar through the middle to make it easy to carry. Although it has a fair amount of weight, 2 people can carry it easily. It fits into the back of a Utility, Van, or Station Wagon fairly comfortably.

The Trials were attended by a number of people from Local Councils, Clubs and Associations and the response was very positive indeed. The applications for this type of product are almost limitless given that it is a pick up, roll out and store away type product.

Neale Price was a Regional Cricket Manager and Game Development Manager at Cricket Victoria before taking up an appointment in Game Development with Cricket Australia.

Factual points of interest –

The Flicx pitch comes in 2 rolls, each roll weighs approximately 67.5kg. A Carry Cradle can be purchased with a Flicx Pitch for ease of transport and to reduce lifting requirements.
